Zone Diet

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , ,

Barry Sears created the popular zone diet, a diet that condones eating calories from carbs, protein, and fats in a balance ratio. It works on a 40:30:30 ratio on calories that have been eaten daily as carbs, proteins, and fats. Though under some scrutiny, studies have been done to prove that the diet does in fact produce weight loss.

Sears gets the name \”The Zone\” to describe proper hormone balance in the body. When insulin levels are at a steady rate and the glucagon levels aren\’t elevated, specific anti-inflammatory chemicals are then released. It is said that these have effects similar to that of taking an aspirin, minus the more horrible side effects, such as stomach bleeding. Sears also says that the 30:40 ratio of proteins to carbohydrates causes this to happen, and this is what he has dubbed as \”the Zone.\” Sears also claims that the anti-inflammatories are indeed health friendly.

Unfortunately, there is no evidence to prove that eating in this manner affects hormone levels. The eventual goal is that the human body gets in caloric balance, thus eliminating the need to store excess calories and fat. It is impossible for the body to store and burn fat all at the same time, and Sears believes that it could take a significant amount of time to bring the body to such a state that using stored fat as a source of energy actually causes the weight loss.

In his later books, Sears points out another important feature of his diet. The intake of a specific ratio of Omega-3s to Omega-6s play a key role in losing the weight. Dr. Sears is thought to have been the person to make consumption of Omega-3s fish oils popular.

The Zone meal, Sears describes, as eating a protein portion around the size of the palm of the hand and eating as many raw veggies as you want. He says to eat as many carbs as needed for mental clarity and to consume enough monounsaturated fats so that hunger pangs are kept at bay.

Like other diets, the Zone diet gets criticism from the best. The America Heart Association warns about the popularity of diets that get most of its calories from protein. They also point out that by allowing so much mean, there will be high risks of saturated fat. Sears himself has discredited this theory.

In his many books, Sears tells of a formula that he has based on lean body mass and levels of activity to determine the appropriate daily consumption of protein. However, the amounts differ in men and women.

It is still undecided if the Zone diet is really a low-carb diet or not. Though it does not restrict carbs as the Atkins diet, Sears states that many low-carb diets do not get the job done. He says they lack moderation and balance.

Dr. Sears has written several books that describe this diet plan in more detail, and using more specific examples of what the Zone diet really does for an individual. There are also quite a few celebrities who have been known to be followers of the Zone diet. The only way to tell if it works, however, is to try it for yourself.

How Many Calories Should a Middle Aged Woman Ingest?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , ,

When it comes to the diet and fitness industry, there are so many conflicting reports, opinions, and statistics. You\’ll talk to one fitness expert who tells you that the only way to lose weight is to do two hours of cardio a day; but then you\’ll talk to another who says you don\’t need any cardio at all. As long as you use weights and eat right, this expert might say, you\’ll lose the weight you\’re after. But no matter who you talk to, or what advice you\’re given, losing weight is all about calories consumed. If you\’re a middle aged woman, and you\’re looking to improve your health, your fitness level, and/or your body composition, you\’re going to have to focus on how many calories you consume each day. But just how many calories should a middle aged woman consume?

Whether you\’re looking to lose weight, gain weight, or maintain weight, calories are extremely important and must be focused on. Losing weight means burning more calories than you\’re taking in, gaining weight means consuming more calories than you burn, and maintaining weight…well, you get the idea. So to find out how many calories a middle aged woman should consume in a day, that woman would have to come up with a set of goals. Is she trying to lose weight, gain weight, or maintain her weight? Don\’t worry, this isn\’t as complicated as it seems. It all comes down to simple math.

To calculate how many calories a middle aged woman should consume in a given day, just to maintain her weight, she should take her weight and multiply it by fifteen. This assumes that she leads a fairly sedentary lifestyle. If she\’s more active, you can multiply it by sixteen. If she\’s really sedentary, you may want to multiply by fourteen. However, fifteen seems to be a good figure for most middle aged women. Now, understand that middle aged women have a slower metabolism than they had when they were in their teens. That means that they\’re burning less calories than they are used to, and the more calories they consume the more likely those excess calories that aren\’t burned off are going to be stored as fat. So take that into consideration when you multiply your weight by whatever number you choose. But fifteen seems to be a good figure to go with for most middle aged women.

The figure you come up with is the amount of calories you can consume each day to maintain your weight. Now, this is where your goals come in. If you\’re looking to lose weight, you should cut five hundred calories from that figure and eat that amount each day. On the other hand, if you\’re looking to put on weight, add five hundred, and so on. That\’s all there is to it.

Now you just need to get good at counting calories. Find out how many calories are in each food you eat, and then stick to your routine. In no time at all, you will reach your goal of losing weight, gaining weight, or maintaining your weight; whichever it takes to make you happy and appreciate your body.

How Many Calories Should a Middle Aged Man Take In?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , ,

Calorie consumption is an issue many middle aged men think about. After all, no one wants to have a huge gut that is the result from overeating. This is the reason to be aware of one\’s calorie intake. Staying in shape becomes easier, when one keeps track of the proper amount of calories ingested.

In general, the average middle aged man should eat about 2,200 calories per day. This is a large enough of an amount of calories that the body is effectively nourished and it is also low enough that excess weight gain will be avoided. Also, as a man ages, his metabolism will start to slow down and that means calories run the risk of being stored as excess fat as a result.

One pound of body fat equals 3600 unused calories. Which means when a man overeats this amount, one pound of body fat will be added to the body\’s frame. Some may wonder how someone can pack on 10lbs of fat considering the high number of calories required to deliver such a big amount of fat. The answer is eating a poor diet where the sheer volume of calories ingested is in the tens of thousands.

Does this sound like a difficult amount of calories to amass? It really is not and a significant volume of calories can be added to the body in one day alone. For example, a chocolate milkshake in a fast food restaurant can hold 800 calories alone.

Now, add a cheeseburger and an order of fries to the mix and you have a 1900 calorie lunch. Yes, the pounds can add up and that is why it is necessary to look for food choices that are low in calories and do not accumulate in such a way.

A major factor in preventing the volume of calories you take in is staying away from refined sugars and saturated fats. These types of foods are loaded with excess empty calories, that will make it harder to maintain a lean physique. Fixing a diet can sometimes lead to the elimination of 500 calories per day. This could lead to dropping a full pound in a week with little effort.

Also, activity level plays a major part in the amount of calories a middle aged man consumes. When a man is very active, a great many calories may be burned, this is why a man that ingest 3000 calories a day and is active may develop a better physique than a man who eats 2,500 calories but is sedentary.

Pretty much, a middle aged man wants to keep his calorie intake low, or in a good relation with his activity level. This will lead him toward staying in the best shape of his life.

What Is The Atkins Diet?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , ,

Many diet plans have emerged over the years, but few have been as popular as The Atkins Diet. In the 90s, The Atkins Diet became a major diet fad, but calling it a fad would be an unfair classification. Whether or not a diet is popular is not important, what is important is whether or not the diet actually works. And this diet delivers tremendous results and definitely works.

Contrary to most beliefs, The Atkins Diet did not first come out in the 1990s. It first appeared during the 1970s and was popular for a short time unit its re-emergence in the 1990s. This diet was based on the discoveries of Dr. Robert Atkins, a physician who was also suffering from obesity.

Based on his research, Atkins felt one of the most common causes of obesity was the presence of excess carbs in the diet and not high fat diets. In 1972, he wrote his bestseller, The Atkins Revolution, but the revolution soon died until it was reborn in the 1990s. Perhaps it was the lack of publicity that lead to its death in the 1970s. Thankfully, it returned and many have been strongly using it since then.

Why do carbohydrates cause weight gain? Carbohydrates are one of these components that make the food people eat. The other two are protein and fat. The prime purpose of carbohydrates is to provide energy to the body. When you do not have carbs and you expend energy, it will turn to stored fat as the source. This means the body will burn fat significantly when you cut out carbs.

Carbohydrates lead to the body raising its insulin levels as well. Insult promotes the storage of body fat, and when your body has a low insulin level, it becomes less difficult to maintain excess body fat. So being a part of The Atkins Diet raises the potential to shed excess weight.

Beginning The Atkins Diet, you enter into the induction stage. This is when you eliminate the body of all carbs completely. You pretty much eat no carbs other than a tiny amount derived from veggies or fruits for several days to weeks to allow the body to metabolize your stored fat. Once your weight goal is reached, you can increase your carb intake to the point where it maintains your current weight.

What happens if you start to gain weight? Well, you simply would return to the induction stage and cut out all your carbs. This will further expand your ability to shed weight once again.

The Atkins Diet pretty much involves a very simple concept, but once that is incredibly effective. This is the reason it is so popular and will be for quite some time. It is without a doubt one of the very best diets available for those looking to lose that stubborn weight.

Do You Need A Personal Trainer?

Tagged Under : , , , ,

Everyone knows that regular exercise is a necessary part of living a healthy lifestyle but, despite being fully aware of the benefits that come from exercising, few people actually do enough of it. There are various reasons, excuses if you like, for this this, but they can all be overcome if you are really serious about improving your health, fitness and / or body shape.

If you are someone who has tried and failed in the past to stick to your exercise targets, then maybe now is the time to seek assistance in the form of a personal trainer. These exercise professionals will look at why you have not succeeded in the past, and will come up with a fitness regime that will help you achieve what you want to achieve.

So, do you need a personal trainer? Well, if any of the following apply to you, then the answer is \’yes\’…

- You lack motivation to exercise 5 days a week.

- You have become bored of exercising.

- You are uncomfortable exercising at gyms, fitness centers or health clubs.

- You are not sure how to use the various kinds of fitness equipment available.

- You are concerned that exercising after a recent injury, or illness, is not safe.

- You are training for a specific event, such as a marathon, triathlon, or even a fun run.

Having established that you need a personal trainer, the only reason not to hire one is because you are unsure of how they can benefit you. There is a common misconception that a personal trainer is just like a gym teacher, who will shout at you and make you do hundreds of press-ups. However, this is not what personal trainers do at all.

See a personal trainer as an exercise buddy, someone who will be there to give you moral support when the going gets tough. Of course, they give you more than just that, but that is essentially what they are, a friend, not a teacher. In addition to moral support, you can also expect them to do the following…

- Set measurable and achievable goals for you to achieve.

- Create a fitness plan based upon your experience, abilities and potential.

- Teach you exercises, and show you how to use equipment, that you are not yet aware of.

- Improve your technique in relation to the basic exercises that you already know about.

- Ensure that you are exercising at a level and intensity that both pushes you, but that is also within a safe limit.

You now know why you need a personal trainer, and what you can expect them to do for you, so all that remains is to find out how to choose the right one for you. Asking the following questions is a good way to assess them…

- What certifications and qualifications do you have? Are you part of any accredited organizatons?

- How many years have you been working as a personal trainer? Can any of your past clients be contacted for references?

- How busy is your schedule? Can you guarantee me the same appointments every week?

After the evaluation of your overall health condition, a fitness programme should be made to help you in performing an exercise and maintain right diet. Fitness program should be designed to meet the fitness goal of the client. Fitness programme can develop the following aspects: strength and power; aerobic endurance; speed and agility; and balance, coordination, and stability.

The present age is one of widespread knowledge about the part that health and fitness play in leading a more satisfying and enriched life. Hence people have become greatly interested in searching for and enrolling in fitness programs.

Fitness programs can be followed at your house or in a gym, and they have many benefits. Firstly it enables you to lay down your fitness objectives, and contains a clear plan as to how you can attain those goals. For example, if your goal is to get rid of 5 kilos in a couple of months, the fitness program will instruct you on the daily workouts that are to be done and the kind of food you should have in order to achieve your goal.

Your levels of motivation and concentration on the task that is in front of you is also enhanced through a fitness program. It prompts you that you must stick to the plan and not be careless. As you notice that you are progressing with considerable success, you will be convinced of the efficacy of the program and will be willing to complete it.

But some critical factors must be included to make the fitness program successful. By being cautious while deciding on your program, you can make sure that you obtain the desired results and feel convinced that you have made judicious use of your time.

The fitness program that is satisfying for you depends on many components. You need to take your actual fitness level into consideration. The purpose should be to fulfill a fitness program that is going to challenge you, but would not lead to any health problems. It is essential to evaluate any current health issues you have before getting a fitness program.

An efficient fitness program must have only one or two key objectives, and they must be exactly laid down. So if you are looking to lose weight, then just concentrate on that and do not mix it with building muscles.

Your fitness goals will define to a great extent whether you can exercise at home or you should join a gym. Then you need to figure out if you will need a personal trainer or not. However, it is usually a good idea to chalk out and execute your fitness program in close consultation with a personal trainer.

Finally, it is vital that the fitness program can be easily accommodated into your day without disturbing your everyday routine adversely. If you set an extremely tough goal for yourself, then you may not find sufficient time through the day for the complete workouts, and will gradually lose the desire to move ahead with your fitness program. Whereas if your aims are too modest, you will start getting suspicious about the worth of all your hard work to follow the program. So be balanced in your approach and then stick to the program to attain your fitness goals.
