What exactly is meant by intensity? Personal Trainers will often used the term \”PRE\” which means \”perceived rate of exertion\”, in other words how hard or how much effort are you putting into your workout. This is something that really only you can judge and it is important to get into the habit of asking yourself this questions when you are training, \”how hard am I working?\”
Basically it is a simple scale of 1-10 with 10 being the hardest you can possibly go. This applies to any training you are doing whether you are running, jumping, lifting weights, doing lots of reps etc. It is impossible to always be maintaining a level 10, though you should try and peak at that level at different times throughout your workout. It\’s a bit like when we do interval training on the treadmill for example. You do 1 min really hard, so that should be at about a level 9 or 10, then we back off some, say to a level 5 which is about average effort. When I say work with intensity, when weight training you should be working between a level 8-10. If you feel you are only about a level 6, ie you could go a lot harder then it means you should put up your weights.
So start to be aware of your level of intensity when training. How hard, according to your levels are you training? Could you work a little harder? Have a look around you, you will be amazed at how people at the gym are not putting in the effort, they are not working with intensity, so they simply wont get great results.
The important thing to do is to plan your workouts ahead of time. This way you will more likely work to the correct intensity. For example if you write down the exercises, reps and sets along with the weight you should be lifting then you have set yourself the challenge ahead of time and you will be more likely to follow the plan rather than just \’winging it\’ on the day.
Exercise prescription can be very confusing if you are not trained in this area. It is important to do the exercises that are suited to your goals. This is where it is important for you to hire an expert to guide you in the right techniques and exercises. After all your time is precious, you dont want to waste it!
So, next time you are exercising be mindful of working with intensity. You will achieve your fat loss goals a whole lot faster!
